Using the text formatting toolbar

The text formatting toolbar enables you to format rich text fields. You can:

  • present text in any way you wish,
  • include symbols in your text,
  • add links,
  • add graphics, video, sound, and Flash files,
  • embed external videos,
  • add and edit mathematical equations,
  • add a table,
  • and edit the rich text field HTML.

To edit the format of the text, select the appropriate option from the toolbar. The following formatting options are available:

  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • Subscript
  • Superscript
  • Left align
  • Center align
  • Right align
  • Insert numbered list
  • Insert bulleted list
  • Questionmark Over Videos
  • Editing question HTML

The text formatting toolbar can also be used to add symbols (special characters, like "µ" or "®") to the editable text. Click the Insert Symbol icon and select the symbol you want to insert.

To add a link, highlight the text you would like to turn into a link and click the Add Link icon. Enter the URL for the link and a Title. You can select the link to open in a new window or use the current window. Once you have filled in the information, click OK to add the link.

To add items like graphics, video, sounds, Flash files, embed external videos, or add mathematical equations, place the cursor where you want to insert any of the elements outlined and click the appropriate icon.

Please note that the file uploader automatically filters for the supported file types listed below, and only supported file types will be presented in the file selection window.

Adding images

To add an image to a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Add Image) icon.
  2. Click Browse, and then navigate to where the image is located on your computer.
  3. Select the image and click Open.
    • You can use GIF, JPEG/JPG, and PNG images up to 20 MB in size.
    • You can specify the Height and Width of the image (in pixels) as well as add alternative text in the Alt text field.
  4. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Adding videos

.avi is an old video format, and Questionmark recommends that newer video formats (such as .mpeg) be used in content to avoid issues.

To add a video to a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Add Video) button.
  2. Click Browse, and navigate to where the video is located on your computer.
  3. Select the video, and click Open.
    • You can use .avi.wmv.mov.mpg, and .mpeg video types up to 20 MB in size. The video clip will be uploaded to the Questionmark server.
    • You can determine if the video should Repeat playback and if the video should Play at startup when the page is loaded.
    • You can specify the Height and Width of the video (in pixels) as well as add alternative text for the video in the Alt text field.
    • If you select the Include as link option and then enter some text in the corresponding field, the video appear as a link that will open in a new tab once the link is clicked.
  4. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Adding audio

To add an audio file to a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Add Audio) icon.
  2. Click Browse, and navigate to where the audio clip is located on your computer.
  3. Select the file, and click Open.
    • You can use .wav.mp3.wma.mid, and .rm file types. The audio clip will be uploaded to the Questionmark server.
    • You can determine if the sound should Repeat playback and if the audio clip should Play at startup when the page is loaded.
    • You can specify the Height and Width of the audio clip (in pixels) as well as add alternative text for the audio clip in the Alt text field.
    • If you select the Include as link option and then enter some text in the corresponding field, the audio file appear as a link that will open in a new tab once the link is clicked.
  4. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Adding Flash files

To add a Flash file to a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Add Flash) icon.
  2. Click Browse, and navigate to where the Flash file is located on your computer.
  3. Select the file, and click Open. 
    • You can specify the Height and Width of the Flash content displayed to participants (in pixels) as well as add alternative text for the Flash content in the Alt text field.
  4. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Embedding videos

You can use this feature to embed videos up to 100 MB in size from external sources within rich text fields rather than uploading videos to the Questionmark server.

To embed an external video in a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Embed Video) icon. The Embed Video screen opens.
  2. To embed a YouTube video, choose YouTube from the drop-down box and enter the URL of the YouTube video (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ZMD2rAPXo). If you would like to embed video files stored on another server, choose Custom from the drop-down box and provide the full URL path to the file. Please note:
    • avi, .wmv, .mov.mpg.mpeg, and .mp4 video formats are supported,
    • .wav, .mp3, .wma, .mid, and .rm audio formats are supported,
    • The participant's device must have a video player associated with the file type for the video to be displayed (e.g., Windows Media Player for a WMV file),
    • and the file must be served over a secure (https://) connection.
  3. Set the Height and Width of the video in pixels, or choose from the four sizes displayed. Once you provide the dimensions, a preview of the video will be displayed.
  4. Click OK to embed the selected video within the rich text field.

Embedding mathematical equations

To add mathematical equations to a rich text field:

  1. Place the cursor in the rich text field where you want to add an equation, and click the  (Questionmark Formula Editor) icon.
  2. In this window, you can create an equation using the provided tools.
  3. Once you're finished creating your equation, click OK to save the equation and add it to the rich text field.

To edit an existing equation, double-click on it to open the Questionmark Formula Editor window and the equation.

Adding mathematical equations using LaTeX

To add mathematical equations written in LaTeX to a rich text field:

  1. Place the cursor in the rich text field where you want to add an equation, and click the  (Questionmark LaTeX Editor) icon.
  2. In the text field, enter the desired equation written in LaTeX.
  3. Once you are finished entering your equation, click OK to save the equation and add it to the rich text field.

To edit an existing LaTeX equation, double-click on it to open the Questionmark LaTeX Editor window and the equation for editing.

Adding tables

The table editor is currently only available in the rich text fields of the 

  • advanced question editor
  • and the assessment editor.

You can use the table editor to create a table in a rich text field. To do so:

  1. Click the  (Table Editor) button at the location in the rich text field at which you want to add a table.
  2. Choose the dimensions you desire for the table.
    • You can create up to a 6x8 table using the UI, but you can use the Add column to the leftAdd column to the rightAdd row aboveAdd row belowDelete row, and Delete column buttons to further edit the number of rows and columns in your table.
  3. Click OK.

Questionmark Over Videos

The Questionmark Over Videos feature adds externally hosted videos to rich text fields and allows users to annotate these videos.

Inserting content

To insert content, which will appear as a link, in a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Insert Content) icon.
  2. Choose whether to insert a file or a URL in the text field.
    • Click File to insert a file.
      • Click Browse and then navigate to the location of the file you want to insert and then click Open.
    • Alternatively, click URL to insert a URL.
      • Enter a URL in the Enter the URL here field.
  3. Choose whether the link to the content will be an image (20 MB maximum) or text.
  4. Select the desired characteristics, including the height and width, of the new window for the content.
  5. Click OK to insert the content or Cancel to return to close the dialog without inserting the content.

Editing the HTML

The HTML editor is currently only available in the

  • advanced question editor
  • the assessment editor
  • and the standard editor for the following question types:
    • Multiple Choice
    • Yes/No
    • True/False
    • Likert
    • Select a Blank
    • Fill in the Blanks
    • Knowledge Matrix
    • Ranking
    • Explanation
    • File Upload
    • Drag and Drop
    • and Hotspot.

To edit all of the HTML in a rich text field:

  1. Click the  (Edit HTML) button to view and edit all of the HTML in the rich text field. 
  2. Click OK.
